Situated on the corner of Clerkenwell Green, The Crown Tavern is a beautiful old Victorian pub steeped in history and maintaining many of its original features.
As you walk through our doors, you’ll come straight onto our bar area, with its etched glass panes and decorative mirrors. If you pull up a seat, you never know you may be in the same spot where Lenin and Stalin first held a meeting in 1905, or where Judi Dench sat in the film ‘Notes On A Scandal’.
Carry on through and you come to our back lounge area with its original fireplace and old ‘Conspirators clock’ of 1683.
Wind up the stairs to the Apollo Lounge with its gold walls and large chandelier, the more decadent area of the pub.
In Victorian times, the Apollo Lounge was the renowned ‘Apollo Concert Hall’ where every night ‘Music hall entertainment with a vocal instrumental concert’ was provided. Step outside the room to view two replica advertisements for some of the ‘unusual’ performers they had playing on such nights.
Outside on the Green we have an extensive seating area where on warm sunny nights it feels, dare I say it, almost European. Sit down with a drink or meal and enjoy the view of the Old Sessions House and Marx memorial library, or close your eyes and listen for the River Fleet, which flows underground nearby. The area you’ll be sitting in was once a busy market, most famously referred to in ‘Charles Dickens’ novel Oliver Twist…..that’s it you remember….Fagin and the Artful Dodger introduce Oliver to the skill of pick pocketing.
